Indonesia celebrates its 80th Independence Day as a reminder that true independence goes beyond just breaking free from colonial rule – it also means freedom from hunger, ignorance, and underdevelopment. In line with this, the Free Nutritious Meals (MBG) program was initiated to address the issue of nutrition as a form of independence for the nation. This program, led by Noudhy Valdryno, aims to not only provide food aid but also invest in the future of Indonesia, especially in the well-being of children.
With millions of schoolchildren, pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, and toddlers receiving nutritious meals daily through MBG, the program has shown significant improvements in children’s concentration, academic performance, physical growth, and brain development. The long-term vision is to cultivate an exceptional generation in line with Indonesia Emas 2045, the nation’s centennial vision of prosperity.
Recognized by international organizations like the School Meals Coalition, MBG has already benefitted eight million beneficiaries, including students from early childhood education centers to high schools, pregnant women, and toddlers enrolled in health services. The impact of the program, as highlighted by Ikeu Tanziha from the National Nutrition Council (BGN), includes improved Body Mass Index (BMI) among children and adolescents in various regions.
Furthermore, MBG has not only enhanced health and education outcomes but also boosted economic activity by creating new jobs and supporting small businesses. For instance, Suratina, a grandmother working at the SPPG kitchen in Yogyakarta, shared how the program has not only provided her with income but also a sense of fulfillment and community.
In conclusion, the MBG program is not just about providing meals but about building a brighter future for Indonesia by investing in the health, education, and economic well-being of its people. The positive impact of the program is evident in the improvements seen in BMI, academic performance, and economic empowerment, making it a noteworthy initiative for the country’s progress.
