Mahfud Berharap Suhartoyo Tidak Tercemar dan Melindungi Integritas MK

Jakarta – Suhartoyo has been elected as the Chairman of the Constitutional Court (MK) to replace Anwar Usmar who was sanctioned for serious ethical violations. Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs Mahfud Md expressed gratitude that the decision of the Honorary Council of the Constitutional Court (MKMK) has been implemented in accordance with the court’s decision.

“Good, thank God, it means that the decision of the MKMK has been carried out in accordance with its mandate, that within 2 x 24 hours, the Vice Chairman of the MK, Saldi Isra, must lead the meeting to select a new Chairman of the MK. And it’s good that two names emerged and were asked to discuss privately, then the name Suhartoyo emerged,” Mahfud told reporters at the Coordinating Ministry for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs on Wednesday (9/11/2023).

Mahfud admitted that he knows Suhartoyo from their time studying at the same faculty at the Universitas Islam Indonesia (UII). He hopes that Suhartoyo will remain a good person just like when they were studying together.

“I know Suhartoyo as my school friend, we were in the same class when we were studying for our undergraduate degree at the Faculty of Law, UII Yogyakarta. We were in the same year, same class, and even in the same study group, so I hope he remains as good as he used to be when we used to hang out on campus,” he said.

According to Mahfud, Suhartoyo can still be expected to lead the MK. The former Chairman of the MK hopes that Suhartoyo will not be contaminated and will be able to improve the MK.

“As of now, I think my friend can still be expected. Hopefully, he will not be contaminated and will not allow the MK to be damaged, it must be fixed and improved,” he said.

As is known, the decision for Suhartoyo to become the Chairman of the MK was made in a closed-door meeting of the judges’ deliberation (RPH) led by Vice Chairman of the MK, Saldi Isra.

The election of the Chairman of the MK is a follow-up to the decision of the Honorary Council of the Constitutional Court (MKMK) on Tuesday (7/11) ago. The MKMK previously dismissed Anwar Usman from his position as Chairman of the MK because he was found to have committed serious ethical violations.
